Tucson is part the EV Project, (www.EVProject.com), which is supposed to install 14,650 residential and commercial chargers and 310 DC fast charge ports in 18 major metropolitan areas in six states and the District of Columbia. This is funded by the federal government for a total of $99.8 million and was awarded to ECOtality, (www.ECOtality.com).

On June 16, 2010, ECOtality announced expansion of The EV Project to include the cities of Los Angeles, California and Washington, D.C. The project was granted an additional $15 million by the U.S. Department of Energy. With the partner match, the total value of the project is now approximately $230 million.

That averages out to $15,374.33 per charging station.... Someone is making some serious coin on EV Charging Stations. For example a 240vac, 30 amp, Clothes Dryer plug or Electric Stove plug, costs about $50, throw in a 240vac 30 amp GFCI for another $100, #10 gauge wiring for $20, an electrical box to contain all that for $50 and voila - you have a 240vac, 30 amp charging station for about $220 - that's my 2 watts worth...

Bob Bookman of Bookman's Books (www.Bookmans.com) bought 3 Chargepoint Charging Stations (www.MyChargepoint.net and www.Coulombtech.com) and installed them at his stores on December of 2009. They were only 120vac charging stations, but they were charging stations nevertheless. In August of 2010 they were upgraded to the new J1772 standard, 240vac. They are at the Grant Road and Ina Road Stores.

As you can see the Plug is Yazaki made and UL rated to only 30Amps AC... the standard is 70 amps. The Plugs and Inlets sold at www.TucsonEV.com rated to 70 amps

Here is Darrin's VW charging up at Bookmans on Grant Road. He has installed a J1772 Inlet with a Pilot circuit that 'tells' the J1772 charger that it is 'alright' to charge.

His VW was the first EV to use the J1772 Charging Stations in Tucson, not a Leaf, not a Volt, a homemade conversion....

We've tried it on the J1772 AeroViroment charger also and it works fine.

ECOtality is going to unveil their BLINK Charging Stations on March 23rd, I'll put some pictures up. I hope some of our EV's show up so that they too will get some News Coverage.
